Erectile Dysfunction

What is erectile dysfunction (ED)?

What are the symptoms of erectile dysfunction? ED is when a man is unable to get an erection or maintain it, making penetrative sex difficult or impossible. It can affect relationships and confidence, but ED is treatable.

What causes erectile dysfunction?

ED can have both physical and psychological causes. In most cases it is due to a reduced blood flow to the penis. Anxiety, stress and depression can also cause erectile problems.

Treatments & possible side effects

Treatment works in 50-80% of cases, increasing blood flow to the penis and enabling an erection when aroused. Side effects vary, but may include nausea, back pain or indigestion.

ED affects most men at some point in their life. You may experience it only once, or it may be a regular issue. It can be a part of ageing, though men can experience it from the age of 18. While it can be embarrassing, it’s common and treatable.

Why are health checks important when you have ED?

ED can often be a symptom of health conditions that affect your blood vessels and heart: high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol. We advise you to have health check to ensure your ED is not being caused by an underlying health condition.

Strength and dosage (mg) for ED medication

The higher the dosage of the tablet, the stronger the effect of the treatment. It won’t work faster, or for longer. Any side effects you experience will be stronger as well. We usually advise you choose a lower dose if it’s your first time taking that treatment.

Are there any alternative treatments for erectile dysfunction?

Counselling can help if stress or anxiety are causing your ED. Devices like vacuum pumps or constriction rings can also be highly effective. Non-prescription remedies and pills for sale online tend to be unregulated – for your safety, we advise to avoid these.

Sildenafil

What is Sildenafil?

How does Sildenafil work? Sildenafil’s active ingredient (sildenafil citrate) increases blood flow to the penis. It enables a firmer, longer-lasting erection if you are sexually aroused.

The treatment will not resolve the underlying physical cause of your ED or increase your sexual desire.

How effective is Sildenafil?

Sildenafil treats ED in 60-70% of cases. If you have eaten a large meal or drunk more than 1-2 units of alcohol, you may find Sildenafil is less effective.
We advise trying an ED treatment 8 times before giving up, considering a higher dose or seeking an alternative.

How to take Sildenafil

Take one Sildenafil tablet an hour before sex. Sildenafil works best on an empty stomach. Never take more than one tablet within 24hrs. Do not combine Sildenafil with other ED medicines.

Can I drink alcohol while taking Sildenafil?

Drinking a glass of wine or beer is not likely to impact or delay the effect of Sildenafil. However drinking any more than this can make it more difficult to get an erection, so to get the best effects, it’s advisable not to drink too much.

Is sildenafil safe to take daily?

Sildenafil can be taken once a day, but you should never take more than one Sildenafil tablet in 24 hours.

How long does Sildenafil last?

The effects of Sildenafil can last for up to six hours.

Sildenafil side effects

Side effects are uncommon, but can include nausea, vomiting, back pain, diarrhoea and an allergic rash. Some men also experience facial flushing, headaches, light headedness, nasal congestion, indigestion, palpitations (racing heartbeat), and blurred vision.

What’s the ideal dosage of Sildenafil?

The standard dose is 50mg. Depending on your age, height and weight, the cause and the severity of your ED, you may be prescribed a lower dose of 25mg, or a higher one of 100mg. Dosage does not affect how quickly or for how long the treatment works.

Higher doses come with an increased chance of developing side effects.

What drugs should not be taken with Sildenafil?

If you are taking alpha-blockers (such as doxazosin or tamsulosin),  you should wait at least 6 hours between taking those and taking Sildenafil.
You will be unsuitable for Sildenafil if you are taking nicorandil or nitrates, such as GTN spray or isosorbide mononitrate tablets to treat angina.

It is important that you let us know which prescription, over-the-counter medicines and recreational drugs you are taking so that we can prescribe Sildenafil safely.
